Spriet update
Imagine the scene: it is 1942, Stalingrad is yet to happen and Churchill has yet to proclaim:
‘Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning’- (By the way he was not referring to a Zami innings but the campaign in North Africa).
Well, in this very troubled year the very first ever Spriet was published. Yes, that’s right: amongst Nazi curfews, house-searches, hunger, uncertainty and firing squads, the Spirit of Spriet and Rood en Wit was not broken. And Wappies have the cheek to complain about the privations of the last couple of years and call themselves ‘het Verzet’. Get them playing cricket is what I say!
We are missing the following years and so if anyone has a copy please feel free to share:
1961-1969 - big ask this cos hey, who can remember the 60’s, man?
1975-2000 - also tough, as cricket was not punk enough in the early part of these decades and not trippy enough later on though Botham and Richards did their best. Skin up, Viv!!
2009-2019 - the digital age: who still had copies then! Do millennials even know what paper is?
Please get in touch if you do have any copies or why not do some retro-articles about the club and add some photos and momentos. Mail to recreatie@roodenwit.nl
